August 2019 Public Outreach (Round 5)
On Saturday, June 1, 2019, and Wednesday, June 5, 2019, the Better Market Street team held community open houses at the A.C.T. Costume Shop, 1117 Market St, San Francisco.
Project team members from San Francisco Public Works, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, SF Planning and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission shared the proposed project design for 2.2. miles of Market Street – from Steuart Street to Octavia Boulevard – and also discussed key topics, including:
- The first phase of the project, Market Street between Fifth and Eighth streets (scheduled to break ground in 2020)
- A design alternative for Market Street between Hayes and Gough streets
- Commercial loading
- Transit stops

Proposed Bus Stop Changes Improve Service Reliability
The Better Market Street Project would re-imagine surface transit along Market Street, changing the routing and bus stop locations of most lines that travel along the street. Lines routed in the center of the street (5/5R/9/9R/F) would stop only at BART/Muni Metro stations (every 2-3 blocks), while lines routed curbside (2/6/7/21/31/38/38R) would provide stops at nearly every block. The changes to stop spacing along with the project’s plans to extend Muni-only lanes and reduce conflicts with bikes is expected to provide up to a 25% travel time savings.
